How a gold pawn is calculated

  1. Marhun value = weight × marhun rate. Example: 10 g 916 × RM 599.37/g = RM 5,993.70.
  2. Financing = marhun value × margin. At 70% you can borrow about RM 4,195.59.
  3. Safekeeping fee = marhun value ÷ 100 × the fee rate. At RM0.65 a month, that is RM 38.96 a month.
  4. To redeem after 6 months, repay the financing plus the fees — about RM 4,429.34.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I borrow by pawning 10 g of 916 gold?

At today's highest Ar-Rahnu marhun rate (Ar-Rahnu MAIDAM, RM 599.37/g) 10 g of 916 is assessed at about RM 5,993.70. With a 70% financing margin you could borrow roughly RM 4,195.59. The actual margin depends on the institution.

How is the Ar-Rahnu safekeeping fee calculated?

It is charged on the marhun value, per month: marhun value ÷ 100 × the fee rate. At RM0.65 per RM100 a month, gold assessed at RM 5,993.70 costs about RM 38.96 a month. It is a fee for storing your gold, not interest.

What do I pay to redeem my gold?

The financing amount plus the safekeeping fees for the months you held it. Redeeming early usually means you only pay the fees for the months actually used — confirm the rule at your counter.

Is Ar-Rahnu different from a normal pawnshop?

Yes. Ar-Rahnu is Shariah-compliant: the charge is a safekeeping fee based on the gold's assessed value. A conventional pawnshop charges interest on the loan amount. Compare the total cost to redeem, not just the headline rate.
