Kijang Emas 999.9 vs 916 Gold: What's the Difference?
You see Bank Negara's official gold price in the news, but at the goldsmith the price looks different. The reason is simple: you are comparing two different types of gold — 999.9 (like Kijang Emas) and 916 (everyday jewellery gold). Here is the difference.
What do 999.9 and 916 mean?
The number refers to purity — the percentage of pure gold in the metal.
- 999.9 (24K) — almost completely pure, 99.99% gold. This is the grade of Kijang Emas and most investment bars. It is soft with a rich yellow shine, and not ideal for daily-wear jewellery because it scratches easily.
- 916 (22K) — 91.6% gold, the rest other metals such as copper or silver for strength. This is the standard grade for jewellery in Malaysia because it is durable enough to wear.
Why does the goldsmith price differ?
The official Kijang Emas price reflects pure gold only. The goldsmith price includes more than that:
- Lower purity — 916 gold is only 91.6% gold, so its metal value is naturally lower per gram than 999.9.
- Workmanship (upah) — the cost of crafting gold into a chain, ring or bangle. Intricate designs mean higher workmanship charges.
- Dealer margin— the shop's profit and operating costs.
This is why two 916 chains of the same weight can cost different amounts — the difference comes from workmanship and design, not the gold value.
Quick estimate: multiply by 0.916
For a rough estimate of the gold value in 916, take the 999.9 price per gram and multiply by 0.916. For example, if 999.9 gold is RM X per gram, the gold in 916 is worth roughly RM X × 0.916 per gram.
916 gold value ≈ 999.9 price per gram × 0.916 (before workmanship)
Remember: this is the gold content value only. The actual selling price of jewellery will be higher because of workmanship, and the buy-back price is usually lower. You can read the short 916 explainer and see a live estimate on our homepage.
When to choose which?
- Choose 999.9 if your goal is investment or storing value. You pay closest to the pure gold value and spreads are usually tighter. Kijang Emas and investment bars are the main examples.
- Choose 916 if you want jewellery to wear. It is more durable and still holds most of the gold value. Just be aware the workmanship you pay cannot be recovered when selling.
Practical takeaway
Do not compare a 916 shop price directly against the official 999.9 price — that compares two different things. Use the ×0.916 rule for a metal-value estimate, and always ask the shop about workmanship and buy-back before purchasing. For gold as a pure investment, 999.9 is usually more cost-efficient.
